Social Networks are not just for "keeping up with people" or advertising your local business.

It's about the relationships.

That is not being said because my company specializes in social advertising and we want to "persuade." The camaraderie that social networks allow you to have is the bottom line.

These networks (Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn ect) have kept individuals in the loop about lunch get-together's, mixers, volunteer opportunities, giveaways, for-sales, help wanted, or maybe just a support forum.

Watching my own account the other day, I began reading my real-time feed and saw that a local chef was having car trouble. It being late at night, calling every contact in his phone probably crossed his mind but perhaps didn't want to bother them.

So, he tweets "in need of jumper cables" and gave his location. Astoundingly, several "tweeps" responded and eventually someone met him and gave him a hand.

It is nice to see people coming together to help each other using the one device most of the world is already using.

What is the world coming to when grandma has Facebook?

What is this "Social Networking" thing?

Many questions arise when the words "Social Networking" is mentioned in conversation. Most people don't understand or have no clue how to go about setting up a social network account.

Here is a brief explanation from digizen.org of what social networking is and how it can work for you and your business.

Social networking services” refers here to a wide-range of rapidly developing services tools and practices.

Social networking services can be broadly defined as Internet- or mobile-device-based social spaces designed to facilitate communication, collaboration and content sharing across networks of contacts.

Social networking services allow users to manage, build and represent their social networks online. Services usually (but not always) include other individuals; they might also include the profiles of events, companies, even political parties. They may let you add anyone in the network as your friend or contact, or they might ask both parties to agree all connections.

Social networking services typically support the public display of networks, although they may offer privacy restrictions or facilitate closed communities. Permissions are a very important feature of most social networking services. They allow members and groups to control who can access their profiles, information, connections and spaces, as well as determining degrees of access.
